Chemistry changes Everything

“Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen, and thinking what nobody has thought” said 1937 Nobel Prize winner Albert Szent-György. From the first discovery of liquid crystals to the first displays based on these substances, some 90 years have elapsed.

In this section, CITIES presents selected pieces of information about “everyday chemistry” topics – including their history, chemical background, production, experiments you may try out, benefits, risks and links to further information.

Several articles have been written for this module which deal with a variety of everyday topics, many of which will be very familiar to students and teachers alike.  Each article is intended to be used in isolation (but they all have a common structure) and they are not interdependent.

Each article is written in the same style and includes the following sub-headings:

  • Title
  • Brief introduction
  • When did this all begin?
  • So, where's the chemistry in this?
  • You want to try something out?
  • How is it made?
  • Benefits and risks
  • Future developments
  • Interested in what you've read?
